Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3
Iris ministries is an interdenominational ministry dedicated to bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poorest of the poor. The ministry was established in 1980 by Rolland and Heidi Baker who have served as missionaries for over twenty-five years. Iris focuses on reaching the poor with a holistic gospel message. In fulfilling the biblical mandate to serve widows and orphans, Iris has over 6000 children in their care and feeds over 10,000 people a day.
What is good news to the poor? Jesus answers this question in Matthew 25 by stating that good news to the poor isn’t just about salvation of the soul but meeting the everyday needs of the individual. Food, shelter, health care, clothing, and community are all basic necessities for life. Iris ministries preaches a holistic gospel that addresses these needs. Iris accomplishes this through feeding programs, medical care, orphan care and home placement, evangelism, and pastoral training.
In our brief time of service we have seen the power of the gospel transform the lives of many people in Mozambique and Malawi. Children receive food and love that changes their lives. The sick and disabled are given healthcare and transportation. Widows receive education and community, which enables them to live in dignity. On other occasions the Lord graces us with miracles and the blind see, the lame walk, and the dead are raised, which transforms the individual as well as their community.
